Prepping Your Pup for the Back-to-School Blues

With the start of a new school year comes many changes in our routines – recent wake-up times, after-school activities, changes in our eating routines, and even household bedtimes, which can all impact the patterns of our pets, too. When household routines change, some pets experience confusion, loneliness, and separation anxiety. Here are some tips to help address pet loneliness when the household gets busier due to back-to-school activities:

Gradual Transition:
If your pet has become accustomed to having family members around all summer, sudden changes in interaction with these family members can be stressful. Ease your pet into the new routine by starting with shorter periods away from them and gradually working up to more extended periods. Think of it like training for a marathon – you wouldn’t go from couch potato to running 10 miles in a day, would you?

Maintain Your Pet’s Routine:
Although it may be tricky, pets thrive on routine, which helps them know what to expect. Keep feeding, playtime, and walks consistent, even with the new school schedule.

Quality Time Before and After School:
Spend extra quality time with your pet in the mornings and afternoons. Engage in play, cuddles, and walks to ensure they are getting the attention they crave from you!

Interactive Toys:
Provide your pet with interactive toys that can keep them mentally stimulated and entertained while you are away. Puzzle feeders, treat-dispensing toys, and toys that mimic hunting behavior can help alleviate boredom.

Comfort Zone:
Create a safe and comfortable space for your pet to retreat when feeling alone. Create a designated area for your pup to look out the window, and add a cozy dog bed and favorite toys.

Scent & Comfort:
Dogs often take comfort in their human’s smell (yeah, we know it’s gross), so leaving an article of clothing that carries your scent behind can provide comfort and familiarity. Avoid using smaller personal items, such as socks, unless you want to encourage a sock thief or worse! Similar to the calming effect candles can have on humans, scents can also have a calming on our pets. Try pet-safe aromatherapy scents such as bergamot, tangerine, and lavender oil in a diffuser, or place it in a mister and use it near your pet’s retreat area.

Subtle Background Noise:
“Hey Siri, play soothing pet music for my pup!” It’s never been easier to tune into a pet-specific channel. Playing ambient sound can help mask the absence of their favorite human voices and create a sense of companionship–even in your absence. Think of it as white noise for your dog!

Training & Enrichment:
Engage your pet in training sessions and enrichment activities. Mental stimulation can tire them out and prevent boredom (and destructive behaviors that can stem from boredom). Basic commands, trick training, and even games of throw and fetch can be engaging for pets.

Hire a Pet Sitter or Walker:
If your pet is extra sensitive to being left alone and has high energy that requires frequent walks or runs, consider hiring a pet sitter or dog walker to visit with your pup during the day.

Positive Departures & Returns:
Avoid making a big fuss when leaving or returning home. Keep departures and arrivals low-key to prevent heightened anxiety in your pet. Leave and return quietly and change up your routine and interaction with your pet each time so they don’t pick up on subtle cues.

Consult a Professional:
If you notice signs of severe anxiety, or your pet’s behavior changes dramatically, or you’d like the advice of a professional, consult your veterinarian or a professional dog behaviorist for guidance.

Remember, each dog is unique, and what works for one might not work for another. Pay attention to your pet’s behavior and adjust your approach during the back-to-school transition period.
