Paws in Public: How to Be a Considerate Dog Owner When Shopping

We love to spend quality time with our dogs, but we also want to ensure we abide by the proper etiquette not to give dog owners a bad rap! When visiting public spaces or pet-friendly stores, Puppies.com offers the following etiquette tips to help ensure you and your dog have an enjoyable time out in public and are always welcome back! Here are some important guidelines to follow the next time you are out in public with your dog:

1. Leash Your Dog

Always keep your dog on a leash while in the store. Most stores require that pets remain leashed at all times, usually with a leash no longer than six feet, to maintain control in crowded spaces. It’s best to avoid retractable leashes when taking your pooch out in public. Either that or lock it into place within the maximum distance.

2. Keep Your Dog Close and Under Control

Make sure your dog is well-behaved and responsive to commands. If your dog tends to pull, jump, or bark excessively, it’s best to work on training before bringing them into public spaces.

3. Respect Others’ Boundaries and Be Aware in Public Places

Not everyone likes dogs, despite what you may think! Due to allergies, aversions to animals, or past traumatic experiences, please remember that just because you love your precious dog, not everyone else will. When walking past people, note their stance, and if they seem to retract or seem scared, please give yourself plenty of space between them and your dog.

4. Clean Up After Your Dog

Carry waste bags and be prepared to clean up any messes your dog makes. Some stores might not have cleaning supplies readily available, so it’s a good idea to be prepared just in case. Disposing of your pet’s waste off-site or upon your return home is always courteous.

5. Ensure Your Dog Is Friendly and Socialized

Your dog should be comfortable around other people and pets. Stores can be busy and noisy, so your dog must not be easily stressed or aggressive in these environments.

6. Respect Store-Specific Rules

Some stores may have specific rules regarding where your dog can go. For example, they may not allow pets in certain sections (like food areas). Always check for posted signs and ask the staff if you’re unsure.

7. Don’t Assume All Dogs Are Welcome

While many stores allow well-behaved dogs, some may have size restrictions or only allow service animals. It’s always a good idea to call or check the store’s website for its pet policy.

8. Avoid Bringing Untrained Puppies

Puppies not yet potty-trained or well-behaved should avoid public spaces like stores. Untrained puppies can create accidents or disturbances, making future visits difficult. Remember, to keep your pup safe, avoid bringing unvaccinated puppies to stores, as they are more vulnerable to serious diseases.

9. Keep Your Dog Off Furniture or Merchandise

Respect the store’s property by ensuring your dog does not jump on furniture, displays, or other items. This helps maintain a clean and safe environment for everyone.

10. Monitor Your Dog’s Health

Don’t bring sick or overly tired dogs into stores. If your dog is unwell, it’s best to leave them at home for their safety and the safety of others.

11. Stay Alert to Your Dog’s Comfort

Watch for signs of stress or discomfort in your dog. Stores can be overwhelming, so make sure your pet is comfortable and not too hot, cold, or anxious.

By adhering to these guidelines, dog owners can create a welcoming environment for both their pets and fellow shoppers, fostering positive experiences that encourage future visits to public spaces and stores.
